What hardware is required for Lexus Multimedia Connect?

A factory installed Data Communication Module (DCM) is required.

What is a DCM and how do I know if my vehicle is compatible?

A Data Communication Module (DCM) is a factory installed hardware component that acts as an embedded smartphone receiving and sending information to and from the vehicle. Lexus Connected Services are dependent upon the DCM.

Lexus is launching Connected Services progressively across its model range.

How does the Lexus Connected app communicate with the vehicle?

The Lexus Connected app sends commands to the cloud server, which confirms the command and relays it the to the vehicle’s DCM. If the app does not connect to the server, the Guest will receive in-app message of the non-connection.

What happens if commands are sent simultaneously to the DCM?

When a communication conflict occurs, the DCM processes the highest priority command. The command priority is as follows:

  • Automatic Collision Notification / Stolen Vehicle Location
  • Remote Connect (e.g. Door Lock/Unlock, Remote Start & HVAC, etc.)
  • Navigation Communication
  • Vehicle Status Report and Alerts
My vehicle did not originally come with Lexus Multimedia Connect. Is it possible to have it installed?

No. The vehicle's Multimedia system is installed during manufacturing and cannot be retrofitted to vehicles.

Lexus Multimedia Connect is complimentary for the first 3 years of ownership starting from the time the vehicle is first registered. After which the owner may choose to either continue, or discontinue the services.

Connected Voice Control offers additional capabilities and learned behaviour capabilities available in real-time via cloud-base services. Connected Voice Control also offers expanded voice commands throughout.

The Over-the-Air Software Update feature allows your vehicle to update its software using a wireless network connection.

Over-the-Air Software Updates encompass quality, capability and convenience updates that are made available for select vehicle systems, such as the multimedia system.
Can I turn off my vehicle while an Over-the-Air Software (OTA) Update is in progress?
You may turn off your vehicle while an update is in progress. For some updates this will make the update automatically pause. The update will resume next time your vehicle is turned back on.
Please note that some updates are installed through the night hours and while your vehicle is turned off. As those updates are made available for your vehicle, further details will be available within your Lexus Connected app, including the range of hours within which the update will be installed.
Can I install Over-the-Air Software (OTA) Updates later?
You can install available updates at your convenience. Note that your vehicle may display ‘Updates available’ notifications as a reminder.
Please note that if updates are postponed for a prolonged amount of time, a visit to your dealership may be necessary to have them installed.
Can I continue using my vehicle’s multimedia features while an Over-the-Air (OTA) Software Update is in progress?
In most cases, you can continue using the multimedia features of your vehicle while software updates are being installed.

Some updates may however restrict certain functionality throughout their installation. In some rare cases, the installation can only progress when your vehicle is stationary and will automatically pause as your vehicle starts moving. Before proceeding with the installation of those updates, your vehicle will display a notification. This will allow you to see the details about the restrictions before the installation starts, or choose to install the update at a later time.

Some other updates are installed through the night hours and while your vehicle is turned off. If you turn on your vehicle while those updates are in progress, safety services and other functionality that use your vehicle’s connection may be temporarily disabled. Please also note that some Remote features may also not be available throughout the installation of those updates.
How can I use my preferred private Wifi network to download Over-the-Air (OTA) Software updates?
Your vehicle can utilise your preferred private Wifi network to download select Over-the-Air Software updates.
Start with turning on your vehicle’s Wifi feature by selecting Settings (gear icon), ‘Data & Wifi’, and switching the ‘Wifi’ toggle On. Then select your network name on the list of available networks and enter your Wifi network password to connect.

You can then start the update by selecting Settings (gear icon), ‘Software update’, and ‘Update software’. Your vehicle will download the update using your preferred private Wifi network then install it.
Please note that your vehicle may use its cellular connection instead to download some updates.
Will using the ‘System Reset’ option on my multimedia display make my vehicle revert to a previous software version?
The ‘System Reset’ option on your multimedia display will remove all personal data from your multimedia system and reset all multimedia settings back to their defaults.
The ‘System Reset’ option will not alter the software version currently installed on your vehicle.

Operation of Service

Is a network connection required to use the Lexus Multimedia Connect?
Yes. The Lexus Multimedia Connect services requires a vehicle network connection. For example, the map information refreshes as the vehicle is driven and when routes are set. However, the vehicle will seamlessly download the appropriate data when connection is established again.

Lexus Connected Services - Lexus Multi Media Connect operate on the Telstra 3G/4G networks. You can review maps of the available network coverage here: telstra.com.au/coverage-networks/our-coverage. While this coverage is extensive, there may be situations where mobile signal is weak or unavailable, e.g. underground carpark or remote locations.  The Lexus Connected Services system will not work in these areas.
